SUMMER READINGSummer may be upon us, but that doesn't mean you should stop reading. Reading over the summer is not only fun, but can help you hit the ground running when the new school year begins in September. Whether you're moving on to the middle school or returning to OPS, we want to encourage you to read over the summer. Here at OPS, we are encouraging our students to read at least 20 minutes a day. In grades 3rd - 6th each student has received a free book, courtesy of our PTA, that they will be expected to read over the summer as part of our "One Book, One School" program. Our third graders will be reading The Infamous Ratsos by Kara LaReau, our fourth and fifth graders will be reading The Losers Club by Andrew Clements, and our sixth graders will be reading the 2019 Newbery Medal winning Merci Suarez Changes Gears by Meg Medina. You can find more information on this reading program and our other summer assignments on our OPS 2019 Summer Enrichment website. In addition, we are encouraging all of our students to participate in Scholastic's Read-a-Palooza summer reading challenge. Each student received a letter with their log-in information on the last day of school, so please consult that letter to get your Read-A-Palooza summer reading challenge log set up. If you can't find the letter or have any questions about the program, please don't hesitate to contact our Supervisor of Instruction, Jenna Lipton. The Scholastic Read-a-Palooza reading program not only provides students with a reading timer, but also a reading calendar they can use to log their daily minutes. Better yet, as students meet reading minute milestones they unlock book donations from Scholastic and the United Way to kids who have limited or no access to books. In addition, the Oradell Public Library also has a reading program that students can participate in over the summer. Their Universe of Stories summer reading program allows students to log their reading minutes online and earn prizes for hitting certain reading milestones. Students can also earn tickets that can be entered into raffles for larger prizes including gift cards, stuffed animals, Pokemon sets, and Lego building kits.
