The AWARD WInnERS ARE IN!We're excited to announce that we now have the 2019 Newbery Medal and 2019 Caldecott Medal winners in the OPS Library Media Center. We've also added the 2019 Newbery and Caldecott Honor Books as well. For those of you who aren't familiar with the Newbery and Caldecott Medals, they are awarded annually by the Association for Library Services to Children which is part of the American Library Association (ALA). The Newbery Medal is awarded to "the most distinguished American children's book published the previous year” (ALA 2019), while the Caldecott Medal is "awarded to the artist of the most distinguished American Picture Book for Children published in the United States during the preceding year” (ALA 2019). This year's Newbery Medal was awarded to Meg Medina's engaging Merci Suarez Changes Gears, and the Caldecott Medal was awarded to Sophie Blackall's wonderful Hello Lighthouse. In addition, we have added the 2019 Robert F. Sibert Informational Book Medal winner The Girl Who Drew Butterflies: How Maria Merian’s Art Changed Science by Joyce Sidman to the library collection. We'll be sharing these books with our students in early May as we discuss the Newbery, Caldecott and Sibert Medals in more detail. If you'd like to see some of the Honor books that have also been added to the library's collection please watch the slideshow below.
